Wanna Learn a Weapon?

Have you ever watched an action show or movie, read a book or comic and thought, “That’s so cool! I want to learn how to use a weapon!”? Not only is weapons-training fun and totally cool, but learning a weapon can also help with dexterity, coordination, strength, focus, and confidence.

Weapons are a great way to improve the dexterity of your hands, arms, and upper body.  You have to manipulate your fingers and wrists when maneuvering weapons.  My shoulder always feels looser after twirling my staff.  My fingers are sore and well used after flipping and turning my sais.

Ever feel uncoordinated? Practicing weapons will help you develop coordination with your whole body.  You move a knife from one hand to the other.  Nun chucks require you to flick your wrist repeatedly without whacking yourself in the face. You also move your hips a lot while handling a weapon, and engage them in a still stance.  And every time you turn with a staff, you have to create a figure eight. Can you imagine the coordination you’ll develop after just a few tries?

Wielding a weapon will also build your strength.  You’ll use muscles you didn’t even realize existed.  Some weapons, like the sword, are heavier than expected and will help you strengthen your arms and shoulders more than you’d think. And all the stances will strengthen your thighs and calves.

Practicing weapons will greatly increase your focus.  Even when using a foam, plastic, or wood practice weapon, you have to always treat it like a true live weapon.  It takes focus to make sure you don’t injure yourself, others, or surrounding lamps.  You also have to focus on the quality of your practice.  Is your strike in the right location?  Are you using um-yang? Are you breathing through the move? It takes focus to put it all together, and only practice will create what you want.

Lastly, weapons training will build your confidence.  You may question your ability at first, but with continued practice, you’ll be amazed at your results.  Don’t give up!
