Goal Setting Works: How You Can Reap The Benefits

It’s not just wishful thinking.
You won’t “jinx” the situation.
And it does actually work.

 

There is a very good chance that you’ve felt a wave of inspiration and motivation to follow your dreams and make them a reality. Maybe even enough to even write down these dreams and make intentions to see them through- only to misplace or accidentally throw away that valuable notebook paper. And nothing is more disheartening than thinking back on what you used to wish for and realizing that you’re no where near where you aimed to be by now. But there may be specific reasons as to why you don’t see your goals coming to fruition.

It’s been proven that visualizing and setting goals for yourself can increase focus, direction, and motivation, which in turn increases your chance of success. You may be wondering what it is that you should do be doing differently, or where to even start.

At our karate studios, we encourage all of our students to create vision boards and set SMART goals- which is essentially the science behind setting achievable goals. SMART is an acronym standing for:

S– Specific (Narrow down your goal, be very clear)

M– Measurable (Let it be quantifiable. For example, how much can you gain/lose)

A– Achievable (Choose something that’s not too difficult, but not a freebie)

R– Relevant (Is it meaningful to you/your business?)

T– Time-Bound (Create a deadline or time-frame in which your goal should be completed)

 

When you implement each of these characteristics to a goal, you create a mindset that it’s not only realistic, but almost easily accessible. You just have to put in the work. Another one of the biggest reasons for failure of following through is forgetting the purpose behind these goals. It’s recommended to write the reason why you want to achieve this goal while you create it, and then keep that on a post-it and put it on your mirror/door/car, or take a picture and put it as your phone/laptop background to remind you consistently throughout your time-frame why you’re putting your energy into this. This brings us to our second point, and another character building skill we teach all of our students: creating a vision board.

Creating a vision board is really where you can allow your creative-side out. There have been a few studies that say it’s actually more effective to physically make this board, not just going onto Pinterest or Google and adding photos to a virtual album. Putting effort into making this board reinforces the motivation and ambition that it stirs inside you.

 

You can print/draw/paint pictures or words associated with your goal, and paste them onto a blank canvas or maybe you’re more techy and create a collage on your device- whatever you decide, place the finished product somewhere you can see every day.

 

Though all that’s been said, it’s still great for us to have downtime and live life without everything planned out. But focusing on achieving our goals will not only allow us to enjoy the downtime we have, but it also allows us to eventually life the life we truly wish to live.
